Athens

Attica, Greece

You are in the first recorded modern Civilization... and you're hungry. You got up early to check out the Acropolis, followed by the Pantheon and the new Acropolis Museum. As if that weren't enough, you head over to Hadrian's Gate and Zues's Temple and before the sun goes down you hit up the Agora. It's been a long day and presumably a long night and you're massively hungry at this point because to do everything you just did, you either A: didn't eat or B: ate on the run with C: no bathroom breaks. Trust me it's a lot.

Since everyone that is reading this clearly ended up in Plaka which is right next to the Agora, andis home to most of the good restaurants in town, you end up in Souvlaki row. You're walking down Mitropoleos near Monastiraki Station and you see a sign that looks this: ΣανναΣ.  This spells awesome in Greek. It's actually spells Savas or I have seen it spelled Savvas as well. An awesome Restaurant.

You're gonna love it. Order a lamb gryo (guh-heero) not (juh-i-row) and get some extra tzatziki (za-ziki) sauce on the side. Visual: a plate with a piece of Pita on it followed by a mound of Lamb and "salad" with a another plate of tzatziki sauce on the side. Combine them both on a fork and shove it in the face, then chew. Repeat process until awesome has disappeared. Throw in a Mythos beer on top of all that and it's a full meal! Didn't see that one coming didja? I have also had the chicken souvlaki here and it too is a real treat.

Savas has been around since 1925 so you would assume off of just that data that they do something right here. Go get em' tiger.

Berlin

Berlin, Germany

Whoa boy are you in for a treat! Enter ze door of ze currywurst (curry-verst).

Welcome to 1946 when Herta Heuwer got a hold of some ketchup, Worcestershire sauce and some curry powder from british soldiers. She decided to call this amazing concoction Chillup. Since we don't still live in Berlin 1946 (I know, shucks right?) come on back with me to present day where the evolution of this brilliant idea has now added fries.

Fries! Starch! I mean what a great marriage! Cut up some german sausage, put some fries next to it, drowned it in curry sauce and receive a toothpick like prong to eat it with and bam, you have an amazing late night food. Calm down, I am going to tell you where to get such a delicacy. Curry 36 is, according to everyone I spoke to, THE place to ascend to currywurst heaven. Really close to the Mehringdamm U Bahn stop on the southern side of the city.

I wish you a great curry verst! choose you're curry wisely!

curry up to the next 2!

Brussels

Brussels, Belgium (Bruxelles)

Anyone for Beer? Anyone for Fries? Anyone for Waffles? Anyone for a a great city that's very manageable? I have to say I love Bruxelles or Brussels as we say. Such a long history and you have your choice of Dutch or French. Homme to The Grand Place, Manneken and Janneken Pis, The Delerium Bar, and who can forget the Atomium.

That all being said, lets get down to why we're here. Waffles. Basically kinder more user friendly pancakes that say, hey, let me hold that syrup, butter, ice cream, whip cream, chocolate, or whatever instead of sliding off me, for you. Welcome to Pancakes 2.0. Who doesn't like waffles. Well, these are the best, even though they would hold any condiments for you, you don't need any. Fluffy, sugary, buttery all pressed into one delicious snack.

Come on over to Maison Dandoy. Head down Rue Charles just southwest of the Grand Place for some Dandoy Waffles on the next corner. Good god, what else can I say about these things they are simply perfection in a waffle press.

Krakow

image71

Lesser Poland, Poland (Kra-kov)

Also known as the Jewel of Poland, Krakow has a lot going for it. There are tons of things to see including some unbelievable salt mines, not to mention the city itself is impressive. I'm sure you've heard of the pierogies, everyone's heard of the perogies and I promise I'll get to that as they are stupid good. However there is another food unique to Krakow that I'm sure not many people have heard of, the Zapiekanki (Zap-e-Kahn-kee).

The Zapiekanki consists of a baguette topped with mushroom, cheese and a ketchup like sauce. This is the most basic version, as you can get a laundry list of things on top of that. Where do you get one of these pizza like delicacies? Head on down to the Okrąglak, a small round building in the center of Plac Nowy. This round building houses loads of windows that sell these things out of them. Unfortunately there was only one open when I was there but I hear Endzior is the best. I however went to Bar Na Maxa and it was incredible.

Once the Cheese hits your lips! It just tastes so good! Those sauteed mushrooms, yum. Now about those pierogies. There is one place and one place only to get famous pierogies, and its open 27/7. Przypiecek, has all your pierogie needs.

Enjoy The Jewel of Poland and see the salt mines, the castle, the Jewish quarter and some fantastic food spots like U Babci Maliny. Just make sure you don't leave Krakow without getting your Zapiekanki in!

It's all Zapinin at the two

Mont Saint Michel

image72

Normandy, France

There is a place that exists that looks like someone drew something on postcard and then created it in real life. Since the 8th Century this island has been used for various reasons, namely as an Abbey. The walk up to Mont Saint Michel is a gorgeous one since they now have a bridge linking it to the mainland. You used to have to figure out the tides and walk across the mud/sand when the tide was out. That being said, what on earth would you eat here?

Well, this surprised me as much as it is probably going to surprise you. A plain omelette from La Mere Poulard. Oh I know it doesn't sound that exciting but it's incredible. Eggs that have been beaten and whipped well beyond an inch of their lives end up rising up about 2 inches! I decided to get some Camembert inside which I highly recommend and it comes with some lovely little potatoes. Since it's a French dish, they have perfected it and it tastes exquisite.

If you're really going to do it right, get an overpriced yet fantastic bottle of their cider. Also Surprisingly this dish is very filling. La Mere Poulard is the first restaurant once you enter the island castle and it gets packed with tourists just after 12:30 so make sure you get there just a hair early. The Castle is amazing, the Hotel is amazing, and the Omelette is amazing. Enjoy the most aired out omelette of your life!

Split

image73

Dalmatia, Croatia

Hvala! and welcome to the Dalmatian coast. Venetian Palaces are dotted up and down the coast and Split doesn't disappoint. Croatia is an incredible place to visit and Split with its Palace, Gregory's Statue that you make a wish on by rubbing his toe, a nice big hill to climb and the sea as far as the eye can see, feels like it has it all.

Allow me also to introduce you to a stew that is strictly Dalmatian. In fact it's sometimes called Dalmatinska pašticada. You can just ask for pašticada though, pronounced (Pash-T-sahdah). It's a dish unlike anything I've really had in presentation at least. You get a flatter larger bowl of gnocchi which is softer than Italian gnocchi (and better in my opinion. Then you get another bowl of two flat steaks on top of each other, like pancakes, smothered in a gravy type sauce. You are then suppose to (I think) chop up or just dump one on top of the other. I tried at first to cut a piece of steak and skewer a gnocchi but then I realized the the sauce is the best part so I dumped the steak on top of the gnocchi and let everything soak up all the sauce. Its amazing. Grab a Pan Beer or a house wine to go with, and you're set.

So you want to sit near the waterfront, people watch, eat this wonderful dish and take it all in at the same time? Well you can do that at a place called Buffet Fife. The servers were super nice and helped me a out a bit with some translation. The day was lovely and the stone pub type place was unusual and different even though I ate outside. You gotta go!
